History of Image Processing   Use of Resulting Images    Preparation of Examination Reports   Database Organization

PAPILLON RASTR software enables users to repair and process images, conduct comparisons and prepare and print examination reports. A crime scene investigator can improve dirty, overlapping or other poor quality latent prints by processing them with RASTR’s various repair tools prior to exporting them for matching.

RASTR offers also the tools for illustrating fingerprint and palmprint, ballistics, handwriting and trace examination procedures and preparing printouts of expert reports and worksheets on identification of cold arms, firearms, handwriting, stamps and seals, on microscopic investigations of all kinds, etc.

RASTR is designed especially for forensic experts to save their time, to facilitate examination procedures and to improve productivity.

Leading Particulars:

  • Organization of specialized, protected databases for storing collections of images, documents, expert reports in electronic form
  • Acquisition of images from various sources
  • Non-destructive methods of transforming and examining digital images including comparative study, original images remaining intact and the history of all processing steps saved in the database
  • Creation of documents presenting both the original and the processed images to evidence the results of conducted examination
  • Printing of hard copies of images and documents

Image Processing

By using the powerful tools of RASTR, you can acquire excellent illustrations for expert reports.

Geometrical transformations

  • Scaling
  • Rotating
  • Mirroring (vertical and horizontal)
  • Cropping of specific fragment
  • Resizing

Image enhancement

  • Brightness and contrast adjustment
  • Positive-negative inversion
  • Intensity histogram transformation
  • Color transformation
  • Filtering
  • Fast Fourier transformation (FFT)
When processing, the system lets you reverse any number of transformations even though performed during previous sessions.

Image Comparison

RASTR provides all the features the expert may need to compare two images. It virtually emulates the functions of a comparison microscope and much more.

The following are some of the capabilities and tools that are available in RASTR for image comparisons:

  • 14 modes for comparing two images within the region of their overlapping (subtraction, split addition, comparator, etc.)

  • Masking with reverse transparency when superimposing two images

  • Superposition of two images by characteristic points

Split addition: Images superimposed in a complex curve
formed by transparency mask assigned on one of the images

Comparator: After one of the images was mirrored,
and both images were brought to the same scale
and superimposed, it was ascertained that the two
exhibits match (size and shape of annual growth rings).

History of Image Processing

Each, even elementary, transformation of an image is logged. The entire history of image processing is recorded in a tracking file. This step-by-step history is dedicated to establishing an unambiguous and reproducible correspondence between the processed and the original images. Every record in the tracking file contains the parameters and time stamp of a transformation performed, and the user data.

The use of tracking allows you to:

  • Undo and redo any number of actions you performed, right down to the original image
  • Resume the image processing from any step
  • Make the image information inaccessible to other systems
  • View the protocol of processing and repeat the operation with the view of testing, inspection, etc.

Use of Resulting Images

The images processed with the RASTR tools can be:

  • Printed
  • Used for originating an expert report directly in the RASTR system
  • Exported in standard format files (BMP, TIFF, JPEG, PNG)
  • Copied onto the Clipboard and then transferred to another application (graphics editor, text processor, etc.)

Preparation of Examination Reports

RASTR brings together all the tools that forensic experts need to design, create, edit and print out examination reports and work sheets presenting evidence in due form. RASTR’s document-creating capabilities together with standard Windows tools let the examiner create layouts of any kind and to use them further as templates.

Images are prepared for being inserted into a fingerprint examination report.
Minutiae points are automatically marked on both the latent print and the fingerprint candidate images.
Matching minutiae (marked blue) selected by the expert as evidencing that these prints are mates
are automatically numbered and charted.

Database Organization

PAPILLON RASTR has an integrated proprietary database management system that enables the maintenance of both shared and individual user’s databases. Access privileges can be established as for the entire database so as for particular partitions and folders therein.

Every object stored in the database is supplemented with detailed information, e.g. object’s name and type, originator’s name, who and when made the latest changes, editable commentary, object’s source, associations with other objects, etc.

Adapted to multiuser functioning, RASTR has a module for administrating the database that enables full-featured user management and access restriction.
