Certification
As an instrument of data input and identity verification, a fingerprint scanner is an integral part of any state-of-the-art AFIS system. Scanner Selection Guidance
PAPILLON has been engaged in designing and manufacturing optical scanners since 1992. More than 7000 PAPILLON scanners are successfully running throughout the Russian Federation and abroad.
PAPILLON LIVE SCANNER Worldwide
Since 1997, those models of PAPILLON scanners that gain greater demand in the biometric market have been certified to meet the requirements of the ANSI/NIST, FBI and Russian national standards.
For more information about our scanners FBI-certified, check out the USA FBI’s web site at https://www.fbibiospecs.cjis.gov/Certifications. |
PAPILLON Scanners Family
The family of PAPILLON’s fingerprint scanners being produced presents models for imaging all types of impressions:
- rolled and touch fingerprints
- slaps (impressions of all 4 fingers of each hand taken simultaneously and of the thumbs)
- palmprints and writer’s edges.
Sensing platens of the scanners are of size ample for imaging full, not truncated, impressions even of king-size hands

The DS-45M and DS-30NM have a built-in LCD display for live video of the scanned finger and for informing the operator on the rolling sequence, image quality and possible errors.
Such constructive solution enables you to:
- easily control the process of taking fingerprints and palmprints (the operator does not use the monitor of the workstation – it is the scanner’s display that helps the operator to concentrate upon the fingerprinting process only)
- arrange a detached place for taking fingerprints and palmprints. The scanner can be installed in a 5 m distance from the workstation computer. To enter all necessary descriptive information associated with the case and mug shots, the operator uses the workstation monitor and the keyboard, and the scanner LCD display to manage the process of fingerprinting. Such work site arrangement does not allow a person fingerprinted to see the workstation desk and screen contents.

PAPILLON’s Proprietary Technology of Smeared Image Compensation
PAPILLON’s fingerprint scanners feature a program method for compensating smears that appear when capturing rolled fingerprints. Resultant images of impressions are generated through program splicing of fragments sequentially captured. (Example 16 Mb)
The electronic imaging process that PAPILLON designed uses a single fixed optics with a high-resolution digital camera.
Unlike the hardware-based method that implies an increase in frame frequency in order to compensate for smears, the program method uses cameras providing reasonable frequency, i.e. 8-10 frames per second.
Thus, PAPILLON’s developers succeeded in finding an ingenious compromise solution that ensures that:
- the rolled impressions are imaged at high resolution and with clear detail, almost completely devoid of smear effects
- the scanners have an affordable price due to refusing to use expensive high-resolution and high-speed cameras
- nonuse of moving mechanical parts and other automation facilities enhances the product reliability in service

PAPILLON’s Technology for Scanning Dry and Moist Fingers
PAPILLON employs a combination of both the hardware- and the software-based solutions to nullify the effect of dry and worn-out skin on the imaging process.
The program approach consists in lowering the sensitivity threshold of the optical system. It is the scanning operator who makes a decision to change the value of the said parameter.
The sensitivity threshold can be lowered as for a single scanning session so as for series of recordings.
This method noticeably increases the image comprehension for dry and worn-out fingers due to slight abatement of the noise filtering capability.
The hardware-based method has been realized through the use of an ad hoc polymeric coating of the scanner platen (membrane). Physical-mechanical properties of such coating ensure better contact with objects being scanned, even for fingers with deficient natural moistening.

To eliminate the impact of any moisture that is present on the platen or on fingers, PAPILLON uses a new imaging technology – moisture discriminating optics – that is able to distinguish between fingerprint ridges and furrows full of liquid (grease, moisture or sweat).

Application Software
PAPILLON’s livescan fingerprint and palmprint devices are generally included into stationary or mobile systems for electronic fingerprinting, called PAPILLON LIVE SCANNER, and for express identity checks, viz. PAPILLON FILTER Express ID Check.
PAPILLON’s fingerprint scanners can be also easily integrated into new or existing applications. For that purpose, feature-rich SDKs are provided allowing access to the scanners’ capabilities and enabling third parties to rapidly develop applications.
